NHS-Galleri trial first peer-reviewed results published

The first peer-reviewed results from the NHS-Galleri trial have now been published in The New England Journal of Medicine and Nature Medicine, providing detailed findings from one of the largest multi-cancer early detection (MCED) trials undertaken in the UK.

The three-year randomised controlled trial examined whether the Galleri® blood test, used alongside existing cancer screening, could help detect cancer earlier. Around 143,000 people aged 50 to 77 took part across eight regions of England, attending three blood-draw appointments over the course of the study.

As the operational delivery partner, EMS Healthcare played a key role in delivering the trial at scale. We provided 11 community-based research sites and more than 120 clinical staff, supporting the recruitment of ~143,000 participants in just 10.5 months.

Appointments were delivered through community locations across 151 locations, bringing research closer to where participants live and helping make participation accessible at scale. All trial appointments took place in EMS Healthcare mobile clinics located in some of the most socioeconomically deprived locations in the UK.

The newly published New England Journal of Medicine paper examines the impact of the Galleri test on the stage at which cancers were diagnosed, while the Nature Medicine paper reports on the test's performance across three annual screening rounds. Together, the publications provide important new evidence on the potential role of MCED testing and the delivery of large-scale cancer research.
